William Shakespeare’s plays are not the only creative works to appear in the First Folio. In the pages before the plays, there are five poems written in praise of Shakespeare and his remarkable contribution to the theatre. Their authors, Ben Jonson, Hugh Holland, Leonard Digges, and his friend and fellow translator James Mabbe, are described in the Cast section of this site.

‘His days are done, that made the dainty Plays, Hugh Holland

‘We wondered, Shakespeare, that thou went’st so soon James Mabbe

     ‘This Book, Leonard Digges

     ‘Soul of the Age!
